Wood as a raw material

This chapter ia a compilation of the lecture notes of an hour-long presentation given to the international students at the Sauna Action of the present Culture 2000 program. The aim of the presentation was a rapid and non-exhaustive evaluation of the main features of wood as a raw material for timber buildings, compared to the other competing materials such as steel and reinforced concrete. Thus, the following text cannot be considered a scientific paper.
