Nanocomposite elastomers with in situ formed silica

Abstract:
This presentation is focused on the in situ generation of nanosilica, through condensation of alcoxysilanes in an elastomer as the reaction medium. Objective of the research activity was to prepare well defined and evenly distributed silica nanoparticles, suitable for an easier control of the filler networking. Moreover, sulphur containing silanes were also used for the in situ synthesis, to improve the compatibility with the elastomeric matrix, via vulcanization. Morphology of nanocomposites was investigated through transmission electron microscopy and the efficiency of condensation reaction was also checked with thermogravimetric analysis. Rheological behaviour, tensile and dynamic-mechanical properties of a rubber compound suitable for a large scale application were investigated in a broad range of temperatures
