Integration of CB-derived building blocks in composite materials

Abstract:
Starting from a nanustructured carbon black through an oxidation with hot nitric acid we are able to produce materials with a different amount of oxygen and a different level of destructuration. In particular performing an oxidation up to 90 hours we are able to obtain a very highly destructurated material containing more than the 40% of oxygen and organized in few short graphic layers. Starting from this highly oxidized material, through a chemical approach we produce a graphene related material that we use to call graphene-like layers. This material is characterized by different kind of oxygen containing functional groups at the edge of the graphenic layers, but the core is untouched preserving the conductive properties. This material is produced as stable water suspension and when casted on flat surfaces it produces thin and stable films. These peculiar properties make this material suitable for the preparation of different kind of composite materials. The material can be used as it is for the preparation of sensors, also employing sophisticated deposition techniques as inkjet printing. It can be used for the preparation of composite materials for remediation purposes, as water remediation, co2 capture, pollutant removal by photocatalysis and for the preparation of interfaces for bioelectonic applications. Moreover, it can be used for improve the conductive properties of insulating materials as metal organic frameworks.
