Abstract:
The origin of a word like arbiter is very hard to find. The indoeuropean and semitic roots have played together to forge an useful concept largely spread in the civil process in ancient Rome. The paper investigates the etymological roots and shows some examples of the role assumed from the person in charge with the settlment of disputes.
