Abstract:
A zero dimensional steady model is assessed that describes the thermo-chemical conversion process of a
solid fuel (biomass or waste) taking place into a gasifier. The model considers a 0D system where the dry
and ash free low grade fuel reacts with air to form a syngas. This last is characterized in terms of
composition and lower heating value on the ground of the assumption of thermo-chemical equilibrium at
the gasification temperature. The model validation is performed over a continuous interval of variation of
the initial moisture content of the treated biomass. The effect of a radiative heat flux on the gasification is
also accounted for. Various refuse derived fuel (RDF) are then considered. The released syngas value is
analyzed as a function of the ratio between the gasifying agent and the treated fuel amount. The optimal
operation point of the gasification system is found for the highest quality of the released syngas.
