Abstract:
The experiences of transition to date confirm that there is no single solution for the different realities in East Central Europe. Transition, affecting all economic sectors and all segments of the population, has implied adjustment crisis for agriculture. In Romania, unlike most of the other transition economies, agriculture increased its share both in GDP and in employment playing the role of buffer during the rigours of transition; this condition can hide both opportunities for agriculture to contribute to the economic recovery and problems. Development of infrastructures, the political will to implement effective reforms, and adequate programmes for scientific research and education, are key factors to improve quality of production, productivity and efficiency.
