The Lexicography of Early Italian: its Evolution and Recent Advances

The paper is a presentation of the Tesoro della Lingua Italiana delle Origini (TLIO), the historical dictionary of Early Italian edited by the Opera del Vocabolario Italiano. This dictionary is the actual product of the research of the OVI Institute (whose director is the author of the paper), which cannot be submitted as a product because it fits in no category of products. Anyway, the paper focuses on methods and tools, and gives an example of how an entry is redacted.In the first part, it addresses some items of the lexicography of Early Italian, that is a recent branch of Italian lexicography. In the second part, it gives information about the OVI Early Italian database, which is the most importat tool now available for linguistic and philologic studies on Early Italian, and on the TLIO online dictionary currently in progress (www.vocabolario.org).
