Abstract:
Magnetic field line reconnection in high temperature plasmas
is one of the frontier problems in plasma physics due to its relevance to astrophysical
and laboratory plasmas. In such a plasma Coulomb collisions
are very infrequent, and represent therefore, an inefficient mechanism for
breaking magnetic field lines. It is known, on the other hand, that plasma
currents can be limited by non-dissipative effects, such as the inertia of
the electrons. Here we review the major results in the analysis of magnetic
reconnection in inertial regimes obtained on the basis of a four-field
two-fluid models.
