Design of the MITICA neutral beam injector: from physics analysis to engineering design

Abstract:
For ITER heating and current drive, two neutral b
eam injectors (NBIs) are planned, delivering a tota
l
of 33 MW in stationary conditions up to one hour; e
ach injector will accelerate a 40 A D
-
current up to 1 MV.
Such requirements have never been achieved simultan
eously. Hence the PRIMA (Padova Research on ITER
Megavolt Accelerator) facility is under constructio
n at Consorzio RFX in Padua, Italy. PRIMA will incl
ude a test
bed named MITICA, with the aim of reliably meeting
the ITER heating beam requirements. This contributi
on
describes the current status of analysis, devoted t
o the optimization of MITICA, providing the inputs
for the
design of accelerator, beam line components, diagno
stics, power supplies, control-data acquisition and
interlock
systems
