Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to present the unique case of Marino Mauriello, a notarychronicler active in Benevento, papal enclave in the Kingdom of Naples, between the
end of the fifteenth and the beginning of the sixteenth century. It relies on studies
dedicated to the propensity of notaries to extend their duty of preserving memory from
the habitual transactions recorded in notarial acts to accounts of historical or more
personal facts, in order to discuss the (re)discovered short historical notes of Mauriello.
It interprets what Mauriello's historical accounts reveal about the man and his work,
his cultural and political influences in the context of the notarial profession and the
survival of notarial documentation in Benevento. It further investigates his political
affiliation through two anonymous epitaphs that the notary copied in one of his
protocols. Finally, the complete historical notes are published in the Annex
