The topographic research represents an extraordinary instrument of knowledge for the understanding of the functions and the historical development of cities with a long continuity of life and an important support to the safeguard of the cultural heritage, thanks to its contribution to an urban planning, shared with the whole community. Summarizing the main results obtained during the almost one decade of activities in OpenCiTy and TeCHNIC, two interdisciplinary research projects carried in the extraordinary context of Catania, this paper wants to offer a real example of the used methodology that, thanks to the application of innovative technologies in the field of topographic surveys, digital representation, management and analysis of data, produces historical knowledge useful for a complete and organic reconstruction of the city, in its historical stratification, from the ancient to the contemporary age. A global perspective, where the short history of the daily life is linked to long-lasting events; where the historical or archaeological heritage puts in a position to dialogue with the needs of urban development, can really represent a value reserve for the whole community.
