Study of the NaCl(001) surface by H atom scattering: II. Bound state resonances

Abstract:
Bound state resonance structures in the scattering of 1H and 2H atomic beams from the NaCl(001) surface have been studied in detail. From a kinematical analysis of the data, the energy levels of the interaction potential have been determined and compared to the predictions of the best fitted Morse and 3-9 potential forms. The assignments of the different bound state resonance features are discussed on the basis of their shape and of the influence of inelastic events on the scattering. The data are then compared with previous experiments and to the more recent He-NaCl(001) measurements of the Penn State group. It is also shown that the energy spectrum presented here agrees well with the recently proposed universality law for physisorption potentials.
