abstract:
the paper is divided in four sections. After placing Benevento in the medieval Italian political context, the overview of confraternities in medieval Benevento will be provided in two temporal units. For the twelfth and thirteenth century, we rely on the work of fellow researchers, mainly Hubert Houben, Thomas Frank, etc. An important but little-known document of 1290 will be our transition to the last two centuries of the Middle Ages, which are literally bustling with change but which still remain largely uncharted. The last section is dedicated to summing up what has already been said and what could still be done regarding confraternities in medieval Benevento.
