Gli Argonauti in Colchide. Nuove considerazioni su una vecchia lettura del cratere del pittore del Dinos a Gela

The Argonauts in Colchis. New considerations on an old interpretation of the krater by the Dinos Painter in Gela My tribute to the memory of Professor Giovanni Rizza relates to the interpretation of the main scene of a considerable Attic red-figure bell krater in Gela by the Dinos Painter. This vase is known since 1970s, and the main scene was firstly interpreted as the arrival of the Argonauts in Colchis. However, this interpretation has not been universally accepted, and at least other five different identifications of the scene have been advanced by authoritative scholars: briefly, this vase presents one of the most controversial iconographies on Attic vases of the5th century B.C. I try to demonstrate that the whole scene relates to the arrival of the Argonauts in Colchis, as supposed by the first editors of the vase.
