abstract:
The paper deals with the water management system in the Etruscan city of Cerveteri (ancient Caere) and in particular with the waterworks distributed along the Manganello Valley, on the northern side of the urban plateau. The Author discusses in detail two monumental installations, the tunnel dug under the western side of the Inferi road and the so called Etruscan acqueduct of Caere. The former is a spectacular tunnel probably built by the Etruscans soon after building the deep defensive moat between the two main gates of the city on the northwestern side (Inferi gate and Bufolareccia gate); the latter is a problematic installation brought to light in 1878, originally equipped with an etruscan inscription incised on the water tank's left wall, now vanished. Yet, the author proves that the first editor of this inscription - Francesco Rosati - probably committed a forgery and only the first part of this inscription could be genuine.
