Abstract:
In 2009, after declaring a state of emergency for the Central Archaeological Area of Rome following
the adverse weather conditions of November and December 2008, the Government Commissioner
and the Italian Department of Civil Protection (DPC) assigned the Institute of Environmental
Geology and Geoengineering (IGAG) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) to evaluate
the geohazard level affecting the Central Archaeological Area of Rome (i.e., Palatine Hill, Roman
Forum, and Colosseum). Research activities started up in February 2009 and were concluded in
February 2011, with the valued contribution of the Archaeological Superintendence.
