Abstract:
At Cugno La Volta-San Nicola, near the settlement of Difesa San Biagio, excavation was carried out between 1984 and1985 by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologiciof Basilicata, on an archaeological context interpreted as a votivedeposit. In the same area, in 2009, the Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Archeologiciof Matera (Unibas), also conductedan intensive archaeological survey. This paper presents a summary of the excavation results from the 1980s and of themore recent topographical survey, along with a sampling of artifacts, chosen from among the various pottery classes andfrom the most significant terracotta finds. A typology of the various materials is then discussed, including black-glazedpottery, coarse wares, wheelmade vessels, miniature vases, etc., together with the terracotta types (mostly representingfemale figures). The aim of this work is to propose a coherent overview of the archaeological evidence concerning theperiod of greatest occupation of the site (mainly the 4th and 3rd centuries BC).
