Abstract:
Two male-sterile genotypes of Lilium were investigated by morphological and histological analyses of flora buds. Both genotypes show absence of the anthers and long filaments. The flowers exhibit smaller and slightly deformed petals and larger carpels with a shorter style, as compared to the male-fertile genotype. The anther development arrest occurs at an early stage of tissue differentiation in both male-sterile genotypes. Some differences are evidenced in vascular bundles, nuclear size and sac outlines. Although the male sterility described in this paper has no commercial value, it could be useful for anther biology studies
