Both horizontal and vertical phytoplankton heterogeneities are evident, in close relationship with the location of frontal systems and the reduction of vertical mixing. In Po plume waters, the species assemblage is mainly represented by diatoms; in the remaining portion of the basin, the ratios diatoms/naked flagellates are quite variable in relation to the water masses.
