The main advances achieved by research on esca in Italy and other countries are discussed, such as advances in our understanding on esca disease model: the inoculum sources of the causal fungi Phaeomoniella chlamydospora, Phaeoacremonium aleophilum and Fomitiporia mediterranea; the genesis and artificial reproduction of foliar symptoms and wood rot; the influence of the climate on disease incidence; and finally control strategies. The aims of the interregional research project recently started in Italy are also presented
