Abstract:
The aesthetic conception of Ángel Ganivet, emblematic figure of the Spanish generation of 1898, comes largely from his tragic view of existence and from his fruitful reading of the works of Schopenhauer. His works, all equally affected by a strong melancholical tone, reveal the drama of the modern man, torn against a disenchanted and empty world. Ganivet personally lived this drama, this incurable dissension between will and intellect that is the tragic password of every human existence with regard to radical duality of nature and spirit. In the literary act, in novelistic fiction in particular, Ganivet tried to find a solution to his condition of soul in exile in the real world, he tried to rescue the original unit by searching his own ontological identity.
