Abstract:
The extract of opuntia ficus-indica, a member of cactacae family, has become very popular in recent years due a series of evidences that confirm its activity on wound accelerating the reepithelization and remodelling phases. The aim of this work is to prepare an advanced chitosan wound dressing with improved mechanical properties for local delivery of opuntia extract, with the aim of helping the physiologic wound healing process. Transparent and shape-uniform chitosan hydrogel films loaded with opuntia extract and cross-linked with poly(ethyleneglycole) (PEG) via epoxy-amine reaction were prepared. The chemical, physical-chemical and tensile properties of films were evaluated. A preliminary wound healing assay performed through a videomicroscopy time lapse station showed that films containing OPU seem significantly promote the scratch reparation.
