Abstract:
Solid state NMR is a very powerful technique for the investigation of a large variety of multicomponent nanostructured materials [1-3]. Thanks to its wide applicability and versatility has gained a crucial role among solid state techniques. On the other hand, nuclear spin relaxometry is especially suited for the investigation of properties of nanostructured porous materials and contrast agents [4, 5].
In this contribution some applications, especially concerning the pharmaceutical and biomedical fields, will be shown, taking examples from studies carried out in our research group.
In particular, it will be highlighted how solid state NMR can give information on physical and/or chemical interactions occurring at the interface between the components, on the structural and dynamic behaviour of each component, and on the dimensions and dispersion of the corresponding domains. Moreover, examples will be given on the possibility to investigate in detail the state of water in porous materials and the mechanism of contrast enhancement by nuclear spin relaxometry.
