The article describes the development of Naples over the last decade, with particular reference to the urban transformations that have taken piace. The period is divided into three phases. The first phase, from 1993 to 1996, saw the beginnings of a new urban identity, with constructive attempts to shake off years of stagnation and give the city an idea of its future. The many initiatives and public debate this generated led to the second project phase, that went from 1997 to 2001. Ground rules were set for the future transformation of the city, providing the framework within which specific town planning projects were set. The third, realisation phase began in 2001. Political and administrative continuity has ensured the completion of many projects. Each initiative is part of a broad urban development project, which leads to a forwardthinking, shared vision of the city's future.
