abstract:
Léon Gontran Damas is the editor of an anthology of French poetry expression, published one year before the more famous «Anthologie de la poésie nègre et malgache» by Leopold Sedar Senghor. Throughout his anthology, Damas states that the French model is a part of an endogenous creativity in West Indian poetry which has often been labeled as an imitation. So he changed partially the point of view of «Misère d'une poésie» by Étienne Léro, by endorsing that 'imitation poetry' is a part of the cultural background of the French-speaking America, joint to that popular culture that hadn't found yet a place in high literature.
