Managing Uncertainty in a Multimedia Document System

This paper describes how to take into account the uncertainty factor in the retrieval of multimedia documents. uncertainty is mainly introduced in evaluating how images and text components in documents are relevant to the user's queries. A suitable management of uncertainty can significantly increas the effectiveness in the retrieval process. Uncertainty management is discussed in the context of project MULTOS, a prototype system for the storage and retrieval of multimedia documents.
