The family Philosciidae (Crustacea Oniscoidea) is represented in Africa by 22 genera and this review includes the diagnosis for each and lists the African species. However, in some instances, a study of the type-material is necessary in order to formulate a satisfactory and complete diagnosis. The genera Afrophiloscia and Uluguroscia are described as new, and several species are described or re-described.
