abstract:
Urban mobility is a key component of the city. Its optimal functioning contributes to the efficiency of the system and to the increase of its overall quality. There is also the other side of the coin: mobility, especially the personal, contributes significantly to the production of greenhouse gases and to the increasing of the overall unsustainability of urban systems.
Starting from these considerations, the paper seeks to identify some lines of action to increase the sustainability of mobility.
For this purpose, we analyse the potential contribution of some physical elements that compose the city. From the analysis emerges that the mobility component may be associated with physical elements related to it and with physical elements belonging to other components. The examples shows, in fact, that a positive impact on mobility can be given, among others, by the functional transformation of elements as buildings, roads, and parking lots.
The complexity of the connections present in urban areas clears why the mobility, like the other components, must be placed in a larger design that can only exist within the context of local planning processes. This level of planning is increasingly assuming characters associated with the operations of transformation of the existing city. This aspect, combined with the experimentation of new methods of plan construction, makes the area planning a field of study in full evolution.
