Abstract:
The paper is focused on the theme of the reuse of public architectural heritage through two eloquent experiences, intimately
connected to each other, concerning the monumental Complex of San Michele a Ripa Grande in Rome and the Reale Albergo dei Poveri in
Naples. Both structures, for their dimensions and architectural language, mark the surrounding urban fabric, forming powerful examples of
the architecture of Enlightenment designed to fulfill public and social functions. The transformation of the Complex of San Michele in Ripa
Grande presents aspects that can lead us to consider the Roman case as a possible reference model in terms of reusing a public building,
converted for a new social function, and able to promote the development of the surrounding urban area
