Abstract:
Of mesenchymal tumors of the lung benign histiocytomas are very rare. We report a large primary benign histiocytoma of the lung that underwent successful surgical treatment. A young woman presented with dyspnoea and cough. Imaging showed a large egg-shaped opacity in the left lower lobe. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy showed stenosis of the lower left bronchus. CT guided fine needle aspiration was not diagnostic and the patient underwent left thoracotomy with removal of a 16 cm mass. Pathology obviated a primary benign histiocytoma. Postoperative outcome and follow-up at one year were uneventful. Treatment of choice for primary benign lung histiocytoma is surgery.
