Abstract:
In nuclear fusion magnetic-confinement devices, equilibrium calculations for realistic systems are necessarily based on numerical solutions. In this work, we describe some of the latest updates to the code FLOW (Guazzotto et al 2004 Phys. Plasmas 11 604) and give some applications. We apply the code to both tokamak and reversed field pinch (RFP) configurations. It is shown that plasma rotation can have a non-negligible effect on tokamak resonant modes, such as neoclassical tearing modes, in particular by modifying the location of the resonant surface. Regarding RFPs, we show how toroidal flow reversal (detected in experiments) can be understood as an equilibrium effect, and how the neoclassical effect can modify the plasma resistivity and current profiles.
