Oxovanadium(IV) Absoption by Plant Roots. ESR Identification of Mobile and Immobilized Species

Abstract:
The adsorption of oxovanadium(IV) by plants (Allium Sativum L.) has been investigated by means of
ESR spectroscopy. It has been found that most of adsorbed VOz+ ions accumulate in the roots as soluble low molecular weight complexes of o-diphenolic compounds. However, with increasing concentration, immobilized oxovanadium(IV) ions, possibly associated with acid polysaccharide components, are also detected. In the presence of EDTA, only the soluble VO(EDTA) complex species are observed, and they are mobile enough to be extensively translocated to the tops.
