Abstract:
As an essential resource for life, water is under serious threat due to rapid population growth, climate change, and industrialization and urbanization progression. To address these issues, researchers are focusing on the design and development of new, robust and low-cost purifying water methodologies able to minimize both the energy consumption and the environmental impact. For the aforementioned reasons several biodegradable materials in form of nanoparticles or thin films have been proposed for water depuration. However, among these materials elecrtrospun membranes based on biodegradable polymer have gained much attention due to their ease of handling, high efficiency and low environmental impact. In this chapter, the applications of nanofibrous biopolymer membranes prepared by electrospinning process in wastewater treatment will be discussed.
