Abstract:
Clonal selection and biodiversity preservation in Piedmont: recent advancements
The aim of clonal selection is the registration of virus-free propagation material with good agronomic and enological aptitudes. The approach of selection, nevertheless, must be respectful about the preservation of intra-variety biodiversity, reducing as much as possible genetic erosion. Consequently the Institutions carrying on clonal selection in Piedmont focused the activity looking for the registration of several clones as much as possible representative of the different local populations of the varieties. A three years cycle of selection is just finished and 8 clones were registered in the Grapevine National Catalogue (http://catalogoviti.politicheagricole.it/home.php), while 11 are just waiting the approval by the Ministry of Agriculture: Dolcetto CVT 64, Barbera CVT GJ 105 and CVT MCC3, Nebbiolo CVT C2, Cortese CVT G9, CVT G12, CVT G22 and CVT G41, already registered; Barbera CVT GJ 102 and CVT GJ 106, Dolcetto CVT N4, CVT N5 and CVT P3, Nebbiolo CVT E6, CVT F6 and CVT G9, Bonarda piemontese CVT 64, CVT 66 and CVT 71 with the registration in progress. Thanks to the selection activity, up to now all the important cultivars of Piedmont are well represented by a wide and varied patrimony of clones. Since now on, the selection will be focused on minor varieties, such as Timorasso, Croatina and Albarossa.
