Abstract:
A network of connected catalyticreactorswithperiodicallyswitchedinletandoutletsectionsis
numericallystudiedforreversibleexothermicreactions.Themethanolsynthesisisselectedas
representativeprocessexampleandtwodifferentswitchstrategiesarecomparedwiththeobjectiveof
overcomingtheconversionlimitsimposedbythermodynamicequilibrium.Thefirststrategy,whichis
the mostconsideredinliterature,consistsofperiodicallyswitchingthefeedtothesecondreactorofthe
currentreactorsequencewhilethesecondstrategyisimplementedbyperiodicallyswitchingthefeed
to thelastreactorofthecurrentsequence.Periodicregimescorrespondingtosinglesquare-like
temperaturewavestravellingoverthecatalyticbedandcharacterizedbycomparablemethanol
conversionvaluesaredetectedforboththeconsideredstrategies.Theseregimesexhibit,however,a
significantlylargerdomainofexistenceforthesecondstrategy.Moreover,thesecondstrategygivesrise
to otherperiodicregimescorrespondingtospatiotemporaltemperaturepatternscharacterizedby
differentspatialandtemporalperiodicity.Thesepatternsariseintheformoftemperaturewavetrains
and ensuremethanolconversionvaluessignificantlylargerthanthosefoundunderperiodicregimes
characterizedbysingletemperaturewaves.
