Abstract:
A network of connected catalyticreactorswithperiodicallyswitchedinletandoutletsectionsis numericallystudiedforreversibleexothermicreactions.Themethanolsynthesisisselectedas representativeprocessexampleandtwodifferentswitchstrategiesarecomparedwiththeobjectiveof overcomingtheconversionlimitsimposedbythermodynamicequilibrium.Thefirststrategy, whichis the mostconsideredinliterature, consistsofperiodicallyswitchingthefeedtothesecondreactorofthe currentreactorsequencewhilethesecondstrategyisimplementedbyperiodicallyswitchingthefeed to thelastreactorofthecurrentsequence.Periodicregimescorrespondingtosinglesquare-like temperaturewavestravellingoverthecatalyticbedandcharacterizedbycomparablemethanol conversionvaluesaredetectedforboththeconsideredstrategies.Theseregimesexhibit, however,a significantlylargerdomainofexistenceforthesecondstrategy. Moreover, thesecondstrategygivesrise to otherperiodicregimescorrespondingtospatiotemporaltemperaturepatternscharacterizedby differentspatialandtemporalperiodicity.Thesepatternsariseintheformoftemperaturewavetrains and ensuremethanolconversionvaluessignificantlylargerthanthosefoundunderperiodicregimes characterizedbysingletemperaturewaves.
