Abstract:
This study introduces Andrea Sunyer, leader of the 15th-century Sardinian-Catalan
aristocracy from in Cagliari, capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, and describes his
activity as corsair at the service of Jaime II, King of Aragon, during the Portuguese-
-Castilian war for succession to the throne of Castile. Sunyer's commitment during
the Aragonese king's military campaign in Portugal contributed decisively to his
social rising; for this reason, he was to later be appointed Veguer of Cagliari. This
study emphasizes, on the one hand, how the Kingdom of Sardinia and the other
States that constituted the Kingdom of Aragon were involved in the king's Iberian
policies; and, on the other hand, how the Sardinian-Catalan merchants, who were
highly active in western Mediterranean seaports, also extended their activity to
Portuguese seaports.
