App. The Digital Turn of the Screw. An analysis of the reasons and the events that led to the creation of the contact tracing apps during the pandemic ("Immuni" in Italy among the others) leads to the conclusion that, at the moment, they are more important as an experiment than as a result: more as an index of public orientations than in terms of epidemic control, more as a discussion than as a fact. The issues on the table concern the relationships between rulers and governed people, between freedom and surveillance, the role that our societies want to give to data-driven technologies and the relationships between public and private powers, states and technological titans, in the digital domain.
