Abstract:
Most of the smaller islands in the Mediterranean sea have important criticisms such as waste management and electricity
production in particular due to touristic activity. In order to support technical and financial feasibility for the
development of smart community, environmental setting information have to be provided. Remote sensing data
analysis can offer thematic maps which describe past till the present land cover and its changes. In this study we report
preliminary activities relating to remote sensing of "Smart grid" project (2014-2016) in Lampedusa Island
funding by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research, whose aim is the improvement of environmental
sustainability of human activity in these islands. The aim of this article is the analysis of change detection of
this island by the use of Quantum GIS (QGIS). The application of this software is widely rising because it is continuously
updated by Open-Source community.
