abstract:
THE RAILWAY LANDSCAPES OF LUCANIA: FROM DOCUMENTARY SOURCES TO THE DISUSED RAILWAYS - In Italy there are many disused, unfinished or simply closed railway tracks, which represent an extraordinary cultural heritage (sediments, tracks, stations, toll booths, bridges, tunnels). Their reuse could represent an opportunity for local landscape development. The transformation of railways and the discovery of their historical memory have a relevant meaning, in particular for those tracks that are no longer visible and hardly traceable, whose identification could facilitate projects based on their transformation. Therefore, this paper aims to start a reflection about the old "calabro-lucane" railways realised in Basilicata (Italy), whose construction refers to a history of forward-looking activities and inevitable failures. Their rediscovery would allow to design special different projects set up for the places crossed, combining the recovery of historical memory with the characteristics of the territory, also regenerating the social-economic aspects of the inner areas.
