Abstract:
Aim of this paper is to re-examine some problems concerning the so called Ilissos Temple at Athens and the slabs with the figured frieze generally assigned to that building. Through a topographical analysis, the Author suggests that the small ionic temple near the Ilissos river is not the temple of Artemis Agrotera, located in the area of the Panathenaic Stadium. The stylistical study of the seven slabs generally assigned to the temple and some new data coming from the history of their travel from Greece to Italy during the Morosini age challenges previuos attributions and reconstructions. Lastly, the iconographical reading suggests a link with the figure of Theseus.
