The passion for the ancient mortars was communicated to us by Carlo Manganelli Del Fà and we have tried to continue the researches on these materials used by men over the centuries. In this paper we try to emphasize the important role played by the petrographical study in order to provides information about raw materials, technologies, processes as well as data that are important from the historical standpoint and for the realisation of suitable restoration mortars
