Abstract:
Exile is one of the most important topics in Mario Benedetti's poetic. With the suspension of civil liberties and the establishment of a civilian-military regime, from 1973 to 1984, a lot of Uruguayan experimented the trying experience of leaving their own country for political reasons and Benedetti was one of them. Argentina, PerĂș, Cuba, Spain represented different moments of his emigration experience, looking, perhaps, for an adoptive country or simply waiting to go back to his native land. The works - poems and short stories - collected under the title of GeografĂas show the different shades of meaning of exile in his poetics.
