Abstract:
In this paper we refer to a project aimed at designing, implementing and evaluating
a multiple-tools system to assist pupils in solving arithmetic problems at the ages of 7-12.
The theoretical framework and the a priori analysis that have inspired the design of the system
are reported with regard to both cognitive and educational aspects. A description of the main
features of the system is provided together with some findings from the first classroom tests of
the system. The software engineering and ergonomic choices are justified by the analysis of the
cognitive proceSses and educational questions involved in the task of building knowledge in
arithmetic problem solving. From the software engineering point of view, the system combines
hypermedia and network communication technologies with knowledge based systems; from
the cognitive point of view learning of the specific subject matter is the result of a synergy of
interpretation, communication and action processes that are developed thanks to the mediation
of the technology involved.
