Introduction: the Copy is More

Chapter
Publication Date:
2018
abstract:
The concept of 'seriality' represents the true common ground of thought be-tween classical art and contemporary practices. It is necessary to abandon monolithic meanings to embrace more interpretations and values. The case of the Discobolus is emblematic. Long imagined as a warrior, it has been identified as such (an athlete stooping to throw the discus) only until a copy was discovered in 18th century. I add that reasons and timing of certain 'mistakes' are equally important. From this point of view, archaeology has a key role in exploring deviations from the original or misinterpretations. Small variations may depend on many factors: for instance, from the sculpture's original location.
