Kerr effect in a liquid crystal coated microsphere is used to switch reversibly and instantaneously a probe beam by a femtosecond pump. Shift magnitudes (2 GHz versus 250 MHz in CW) ruled out thermooptical effects. ©2010 Optical Society of America.
