Abstract:
Despite scanty documentation on parliamentary sessions in late medieval Sardinia, the study of parliaments held in this kingdom is relevant to analyse the typologies of 'commissions', seen as working groups or counsels, which have interacted in such assemblies.
Historiography has not addressed this aspect in any detail, albeit in recent years there have been important studies on Sardinian representative assemblies. Nevertheless, a first thorough examination of these counsels is paramount as they afford a privileged viewpoint in the study of parliamentary sessions' development, in some cases playing a key role in the management and resolutions of each stamento and parliament in general.
This paper addresses such 'commissions', which were known by different names, as well as the power they exerted, investigating how and why they were formed, detailing who established them and, in particular, the interaction between their members and the rest of the parliament.
Particular attention is given to the Braccio Reale for its direct links with the municipal life in order to intrinsically consider councils that took place before and in parallel to parliamentary sessions for the election, subsequent control and exercise of municipal mayors' role within parliamentary assemblies.
