In this contribution, we present a short-radar radar for occupancy sensing and activity discrimination in a through-wall scenario. The system is a continuous wave Doppler radar operating in the S-band of the electromagnetic spectrum to enable a proper radio signal penetration through building walls. The radar signal undergoes a phase modulation produced by human movements and tiny periodic chest displacements associated to respiratory activity. A data processing algorithm is proposed to detect in real-time humans in the scene and provide automatically also an indication on whether they are static or moving. Experimental tests performed in an indoor environment confirm that the proposed sensor and related signal processing provide timely and reliable results.
