abstract:
The paper deals with the first translations of George Buffon's Histoire Naturelle into Italian, since 1770, in Milan and Naples, investigating reasons, context and intellectual circles in the Enlightened environment which have been involved in the enterprise. While in the earlier, Milanese edition the Italian edition might have been endorsed by Pietro Moscati, the Neapolitan in-depth revision and new edition indicates an involvement at least of Gianfrancesco Gravina. Differences in concern and scope of the two editions are also taken into account.
