By way of example of the natural biodiversity of algae and cyanobacteria, the fundamental steps concerning isolation, taxonomy, morphology and determination of some specific physiological characteristics in two, Arthrospira and Cyanospira, among the several cyanobacteria and algae used in outdoor mass cultures during the last fifty years in Florence are described.
