Abstract:
Portable unilateral NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) technique was used to study, in a non-destructive
and non-invasive way, the stratigraphy of an ancient detached mural paintings from Nubia, belonging
to a collection of mural paintings detached from Sonqi Tino, exhibited at the Near Eastern Museum
Sapienza University of Rome. The monitoring of the state of conservation and the study of the constitutive
materials of the painting were carried out before planning the restoration project. The first step of
this study was performed in situ using portable NMR. The results obtained in situ allowed the planning
of a minimal representative sampling campaign to perform a set of micro-invasive analytical techniques
such as multinuclear solid state NMR, optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy-energy
dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), infrared and Raman spectroscopy. This second step of study was
carried out with the aim of identifying and chemically characterizing the constitutive materials of the
detached painting.
